For over 20 years, Stephen Armstrong has fed off Melbourne city as a
generous provider of artistic fuel and inspiration. This year, working as ‘artist in
residence’ at St Vincent’s Private Hospital from the top floor studio,
with its
spectacular, uninterrupted skyscraper views of Melbourne and surrounding
parks, Stephen discovered a wealth of material for his nocturnal and daytime
cityscapes.
In Stephen Armstrong’s paintings, those subjects most familiar to Melbourne
residents and visitors receive bold artistic reinvention. Although intensely
familiar to the artist – as they are to many – Melbourne’s buildings and parks,
trams and trains, tracks and roads, are re-presented in a new light. Armstrong reconstructs Melbourne, granting
it
a new visual identity, inviting viewers to examine the ‘everyday’ with
fresh eyes.
