“Subway Series : New York”

A collection of Paintings by Kirsten Hicks 2006/07

I have always been fascinated by people. We are such complex and curious creatures. Whether it be our physical appearance, quirky characteristics or behaviour, we are all incredibly unique. This is why I find observing strangers so amazingly captivating. I feel compelled to transform these encounters into something physical. Something which is more than just a memory. Where a fleeting yet distinctive moment can be visually suspended in time and become something for others to later appreciate. This impulse has become the basis of my work.

This particular collection of paintings was created whilst I was living in New York. I was completely mystified by this incredible city, but more so by the diversity of the people living there. There is something remarkable about being completely still whilst watching thousands of people rushing frantically by. However, my desire to capture these people and their lives was overwhelmed by the velocity and energy which they were expelling. It was at this stage I realised I had to find a stagnant situation, where people would be still, if only momentarily. I would then be able to properley observe these intrigueing men, women and children.

The Subway is an integral part of everyday life for people living in New York. It is the main source of transportation for the city’s inhabitants and I was no different. The necessity to commute back and forth between Brooklyn and Manhattan each day would become the motivation for my work. The train carriages of the New York subway would be my study ground, but more importantly the travellers and their stories, my inspiration.
