“New Works”

Art is created for multifarious of reasons, to illustrate, to impress or to express, to shock, to communicate and to delight. The older I get the more I believe that the latter of these is the most valid.

As Brett Whiteley said of my dark works, why paint this doom when there is enough of it in the world, I took this to heart and now paint works that can bring a smile of delight or wry intrigue to the face and heart of my audience, then, perhaps I have made a start.

There is no doubt I had to get these dark images out of my system, to progress, both personally and Artistically. They were exhibited at the Australian Galleries in 1990 'Punch and Judy' series and later my 1992 'Witness' series.

The former where Punch is the Animus and the dark Machiavellian manipulator, Judy was the Anima and innocent victim.

The later was my attempt to make the Artist an independent witness without fear or favour of our Australian dark side, how the early settlers, squatters, and the authority of the time treated our indigenous peoples and the convicts who came here against their will.
