Steve Lopes  ---“here or there”

Following a successful stint in the UK, where he studied with renowned Scottish figurative artist, Peter Howson,   Steve Lopes latest exhibition of rich paintings, titled “Here or There” , is on display at Pollock Gallery until 29th March.

Steve has created a powerful body of work by using subterranean forces which shape the landscape where barebacked figures smile in the face of prescient danger.   The paintings highlight our own endeavours against internal forces by exploring the entry points into and below the surface, whether they be natural or subconscious

Steve Lopes is regarded as one of the country’s most promising young figurative painters – an achievement not easily reached in Australia’s tough,

competitive art world.  Yet Steve has earned the title by consistently producing exceptionally fine work with rich subject matter that has never failed to attract the attention of critics and collectors.

Recently, the National Gallery of Australia purchased three of Steve Lopes works, adding him to their highly prized collection of Australia’s finest artists.

His portraits and paintings (where narrative themes are brought to life through poetic peopled landscapes) have  been selected in numerous prestigious national juried  shows and art awards.

Steve Lopes has been shortlisted twice in the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship by the AGNSW, He has been exhibited in the Archibald Salon de Refuses in 2000, 2001, 2004 and 2005 and in the Doug Moran Portrait Award which toured nationally in 2000/2001.

Graduating as a Batchelor of Fine Arts from the University of NSW in 91, Steve immediately left for New York to attend the Art Students League.

In 1998 he returned from two years’ study in London where he was twice named in the top young artists under 30 in Britain by the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, exhibiting at the Mall Galleries.
