Young Rabbi a Chassidic Pop Artist !

How Yitzchok Moully expresses his colourful side

As everyone knows…not all roads lead to Rome.  Or the Rabbinate.! But the youthful Rabbi Yitzchok Moully determinedly stuck to his chosen path even when the odds were against him and his childhood upbringing was well and truly off the beaten track.

For a start, his parents were (then) hippies, exposing the “rabbi to be” to far more colour than one would expect in the rigorously orthodox Chassidic community.

Yitzchok did in fact receive formal education in day schools in Australia and later, at the rabbinical college of America, and though his inner passion yearned for artistic expression, his classes did not include formal art studies.

Never one to give up, Yitzchok began dabbling and experimenting with various art forms, eventually finding an expression for his creativity in the silkscreen process.

As his confidence grew,  Moully discovered he could actually create artworks which  successfully reflected his Chassidic leanings.  His silkscreens contrast strong Judaic and Chassidic images with vibrant bold colours, creating a visually striking combination which Moully describes as :CHASSIDIC POP ART.

Moully’s art reveals that the essence of Chassidic thought is far from black and white -  Under the black hat there is a wealth of vibrant colorful energy waiting to be
released.

Yitzchok Moully is the Youth Rabbi at the Chabad Jewish Center in Basking Ridge New Jersey, where he resides together with his wife Batsheva and three children. A Rabbi by day and an Artist by night – when he gets the chance!
