Kate Hellard worked as a leading staff illustrator with the

Melbourne Herald-Sun group of newspapers and magazines for ten years.

She subsequently combined full time painting with teaching art to secondary and adult students at the Council of Adult Education, Hawthorn Artists Society, Mentone-Mordialloc Art Group and Beaumaris Art group.

Now in her  80’s, Kate is still an active member of the above mentioned art societies, as well as the Contemporary Artists Society and Victorian Artists Society.  Kate and Frank (her cartoonist/illustrator husband) live in Frankston

where she continues to paint full time and attend weekly life-class.

Throughout the years, Kate travelled widely in France, Italy and Japan on Art Study Tours.  Her chief influences have been Matisse, Picasso and later, the expressionists of the Cobra School. Current passions are drawings by Henry Moore, paintings of the Italian classicists and the Japanese printmakers.

Kate believes that an artist’s inner impulses will prevail over any influences, and that a creative artist needs an active imagination and a good visual memory.

Her desire is to produce aesthetically pleasing and visually engaging images.

Kate Hellard’s paintings and drawings are represented in many corporate, private and Government collections throughout Australia and overseas.
