Since moving to Melbourne in
1982, Chilean born artist, Esteban Simich
held many successful
exhibitions with prominent galleries, including
Tolarno, Pinacotheca,
Latrobe University and Realities. In
the mid nineties,
he returned to Chile for
several years where he developed a totally new style
of painting.
These include black
paintings on black canvas
(pure black – not pigmented
with other colours) using exceptionally fine
brushwork which allows the illustrations
to be seen under most lights and
from any position. These skilfully painted illustrations
actually do give an
impression of colour.
The works on paper, which
have an uncanny resemblance to black and
white photographs, are oil
paintings (as are the surreal figurative works.)
