These paintings have all
been inspired
by our trips to Morocco, but
of course,
I put my own interpretation
on them.
Little and big images remain
in my memory. I just enhance or
abstract, and add the exotic touches

Judith Laws has become widely recognized as
one of Australia’s most vibrant contemporary artists. Her paintings are full of
feelings as well as colour, with inspiration being drawn from her luscious
Sunshine Coast garden and her extensive overseas travel. Her expressive art is
not bound by specific subject matter or media but flows through acrylics,
pastels and watercolour in a mixed media combination often incorporating gold
leaf and collage for heightened effects. Painting trips along Queensland’s
Coast to Central Australia, The Flinders Ranges, The Kimberleys, The Simpson
Desert, The Strzelecki and Sturt’s Stony Deserts have produced adventurous and
exciting results.
The connecting thread of colour explains the
basis of Judith’s love affair with the vividity in nature, but her eyes and
horizons have been widened further. Over several years the artist has
experienced cultures and landscapes as varied as Morocco, Greece, Italy, Egypt,
Turkey, Spain, Bali and Mexico. The theme of warmth and colour continues
through these nations of exuberance vibrance and sun and enriched by the varied
cultures and historic influences. All these characteristics are conveyed
through confident, sweeping brushstrokes of jewel-like colours as if still lit
directly by the sun.
The impact of Judith’s interpretative
paintings is offset by the sensual subtlety of her nude studies. These are
voluptuous, curvaceous forms which also contain influences of classical
sculptures and images of an older civilization and focus on the timeless beauty
of the female figure. Whilst the style in these works is in contrast to the
unmistakably powerful use of colour in the more abstract paintings, there are
comparisons to be drawn. Both are inspired by nature leaving the viewer to
complete the whole picture. They share flowing contours and the most essential
ingredients is any Judith Laws’ work – passion.
